The Challenge:

North Kingstown Arts Council is a municipal committee for the town of North Kingstown, RI. Their primary challenge is getting residents to understand what the Council does for the community. There is a similarly named Wickford Art Association, a membership-based artist group, which has a gallery space in town and also organizes fine arts events. Residents commonly confuse these two groups, or attribute NKAC initiatives with general town management.

This is important because their secondary goal is fundraising for new programs. As a municipal committee, their ability to fundraise is limited because they lack 501c3 non-profit status, so they don’t qualify for a majority of grants or corporate sponsorships. This leaves them dependent on town-allocated funds and donations from the public. They are still a non-profit, service-based organization, so any profit they gain goes towards sustaining existing programs or planning new programs. This brochure was a part of a larger initiative to improve fundraising and awareness efforts.

The Approach:

NKAC had a brochure, but it used outdated branding and didn’t reflect the breadth of events and programming they organize and sponsor. I was a council member at the time and had redesigned their website earlier in the year, so I had a good picture of the programming that they organized and sponsored.

I started by grouping different types of events and pulled out the most recent, most repeated, and most exciting. I needed to balance the number of included events with images and readable copy that describe the events and their impact on the town. To create visual appeal, I illustrated a series of fun backgrounds using the NKAC brand palette.

To address their secondary goal, I used the back panel of the brochure as a call to action and connection space with a direct appeal for fundraising and a convenient QR code and list of contact information.

The Outcome:

Now, North Kingstown Arts Council has a physical way to communicate the value they contribute to the town and community. They can use it for public events, state arts conferences, or fundraising meetings for the foreseeable future.

Key Takeaway ⭐️

Design doesn’t have to be stuffy to be impactful.
